Winter weather and ice can disrupt daily routines and if not careful, can be very dangerous.

Based upon where you live, you may need to make important decisions in advance about how your family will handle this emergency situation.  Develop an emergency plan based upon your family's needs and establish an emergency kit.

If winter weather is approaching, information and warnings will be broadcast on local TV and radio stations.

In the event of winter weather:

  • Do not drive unless necessary.
  • If you must drive, be sure your fuel tank is full.
  • When driving or walking, be careful on ice, be aware of black ice, and reduce your speed.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car.
  • If exposed to cold weather, watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia—slurred speech, confusion, shivering that will not stop, or body temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Seek medical attention for persons showing these symptoms.

How can I be prepared?

  • Be alert to local weather conditions. Consider getting a weather radio or listen to local stations
  • Have an emergency kit prepared.
  • Make sure that all family members know how to respond during winter weather:
    • Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
    • Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1, police, or fire department and which radio station to tune to for emergency information.
